On April 29, 2025, marking the fifth anniversary of Irrfan’s passing, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar shared an emotional open letter on Instagram, reflecting on their profound friendship and the void left by the actor’s absence.

Sircar, who directed Irrfan in the critically acclaimed film Piku, began his letter on a heartfelt note, writing, “Dear Irfaan, Friend, wherever you are, I know you’re doing well and have probably made many new friends there.” He fondly recalled their jhal muri sessions, deep conversations about life, spirituality, and science, especially those shared during Irrfan’s time in London. “Your smile and those mystical eyes of yours are etched in my memory,” he wrote, emphasising the lasting impact of their bond.

Addressing Irrfan directly, Sircar provided updates on his family, “Irfaan, I wanted to let you know that Babil and Ayan are doing well.”

He mentioned playing football with Babil and taking on a guardian-like role in his life. Highlighting Babil’s foray into acting, Sircar revealed that he and producer Ronnie Lahiri recently completed a film project with him.

“He’s growing into a fine artiste, slowly carving his own space in the industry,” Sircar noted, expressing confidence that Babil is on the right path, just as Irrfan had envisioned.

Sircar’s tribute resonated deeply within the film community. Actress Richa Chadha commented, “Cinema misses him”, while Rasika Dugal, Banita Sandhu, and Bhumi Pednekar expressed their sentiments with heart emojis. The letter serves as a testament to Irrfan’s indelible mark on cinema and the lives he touched.

Shoojit Sircar’s Piku, starring the late legendary actor Irrfan is set to re-release in theatres on May 9, 2025, to celebrate the movie’s 10th anniversary. The film, starring Deepika Padukone alongside Khan, was a critically acclaimed project, which grossed 141 crores worldwide.
