Robert Pattinson’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Mickey 17, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, is set to release in theaters on March 7, 2025. Based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, the film follows Mickey Barnes, a disposable worker who is repeatedly cloned after dying on dangerous missions to colonize a new planet. This marks Bong’s first project since Parasite, making it one of the most anticipated films of the year. The movie initially faced multiple delays, with its release pushed back several times after filming wrapped in December 2022. Originally set for March 2024, it was later moved to January 31 before settling on the final date.n
As part of the film’s promotions, Pattinson and Bong recently toured South Korea, where the actor delighted fans with his playful side. They also made an appearance at the Berlinale – Berlin International Film Festival, where Pattinson spoke about his creative inspirations for Mickey 17. During a press conference, he was asked if anime influenced his portrayal of the character, considering his previous work with legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. For those unfamiliar, Pattinson voiced The Heron in the English-dubbed version of Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning animated film The Boy and the Heron. While he clarified that Miyazaki wasn’t a direct influence, he did take inspiration from anime, particularly its sudden and dramatic mood shifts, which he tried to incorporate into Mickey 18’s character.
Along with anime, Pattinson also looked to Bong’s 2003 crime thriller Memories of Murder, especially in terms of comedy. He praised Bong’s unique approach to physical humor, noting how even in crowded scenes, the director manages to choreograph movements in a way that feels both natural and visually dynamic. He specifically mentioned a cafeteria scene where Bong subtly directed the crowd’s motions, something Pattinson wanted to emulate in his own performance.
The film boasts an impressive cast, with Pattinson leading alongside Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. With Bong Joon Ho at the helm and its intriguing sci-fi premise, Mickey 17 is shaping up to be one of the must-watch films of 2025.
