One of the latest video game adaptations gearing up for a theatrical release, A Minecraft Movie, arrives this week. Starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black and more, the Jared Hess directorial is the first live-action film on the best-selling video game of all time. Ahead of the film’s release, Black and Hess heaped praise on each other.

In exclusive quotes shared with Filmfare, director Jared Hess opened up about working with Jack Black. “Jack Black is totally bananas, and working with him the first time was so much fun. The guy’s a ball of strange joy and zaniness. We’ve been trying to do something, and then finally the stars aligned for this one, and it’s just been a riot. He’s a total riot,” he said.

Jack Black shared, “I’m a big believer in creativity and arts being taught in schools and prioritized. I really believe music and theatre are huge for child development. That’s such a big part of this movie, and it’s a big reason why I wanted to do the movie.”

He added, “There’s no-one better than Jared Hess to champion this movie because all his life he’s been a great artist and has championed those causes as well. He’s such a creative, sweet guy. He’s got a lot of love and a lot of creativity. He’s an incredible human being. Love to hang out with him on the set, off the set.” The film marks the first collaboration between Black and Hess since 2006.

About A Minecraft Movie

The official synopsis reads, “Four misfits – Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) – find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ A Minecraft Movie, which also stars Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge, arrives in cinemas on April 4, 2025.
